Strategy: Lumpsum vs. SIP for Your Goal

When you have a target amount in mind—whether it's ₹10 Lakhs for a new car or ₹1 Crore for retirement—the most common question is: "How long will it take?"

ALumpsum Path

Ideal if you already have a corpus. This path calculates the time required for your initial capital to grow to the target through 100% compounding.

BSIP Path

Perfect for salaried professionals. It calculates how many months of regular monthly contributions (at your chosen rate) are needed to hit the target.

The Mathematical Logic

This calculator solves for Time (n) using the standard future value formulas. For a Lumpsum, it uses logs to find when the growth factor bridges the gap. For SIP, it solves the "Annuity Due" formula where interest is calculated at the beginning of each period.

For Lumpsum Growth:

n = ln(Target / Principal) / ln(1 + Rate)

Goal Reachability

Our calculator also features a "Winner Strategy" comparison. It highlights which method gets you to your goal faster and explicitly identifies if a goal is mathematically unreachable (e.g., if you have zero investment but a positive target).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this calculator account for inflation?

This specific calculator focuses on the nominal growth of your money—i.e., the actual number on your bank statement. It does not adjust for inflation. If you want to know how long it takes to reach a target in 'today's purchasing power', you should subtract the inflation rate from your expected return rate (e.g., use 6% instead of 12% if inflation is 6%).

Q: Why is the time duration result sometimes in decimals?

Mathematical compounding is continuous. A result of '5.5 Years' means exactly 5 years and 6 months. Our calculator converts the decimal portion into months for easier reading.

Q: What if I add monthly contributions (SIP) as well?

This calculator is designed strictly for a one-time Lump Sum investment. If you are adding monthly contributions, the math becomes more complex. Please use our 'SIP + Lump Sum Calculator' or 'Goal Planner' to handle scenarios with regular ongoing investments.
